Sunday Sport Roundup: 08/03/2020

The Terriers aid Leeds' promotion push, the Bantams' return to League 1 is in doubt and Giants beat the champions.

The big news this Sunday is Huddersfield Town’s defeat in yesterday's West Yorkshire derby.

The Terriers lost 2-0 away to Leeds.

That’s a result with serious implications at both ends of the table – with Marcelo Bielsa’s whites now top of the Championship with a 7 point cushion between themselves and Fulham in 3rd.

It would take a remarkable collapse for Leeds to miss out on promotion from here, something Leeds – and historically Marcelo Bielsa’s sides – are very capable of.

Meanwhile Danny Cowley's men are just three points above the relegation zone.

As it stands they have to stay above Charlton in 22nd with 39 points, who lost to fellow strugglers Middlesbrough yesterday. Luton (35 points) and Barnsley (34 points) seem unlikely to pose a threat to the Terriers at this stage, but both have picked up points in recent weeks.

In League 2, Bradford City also lost 2-0 - they were away at Salford.

Stuart McCall’s side are still struggling to find consistency after beating Plymouth last time out – they’ve now won just twice in 13 games.

It’s been a fairly mediocre season for a team many considered to be favourites for the league at the start of the campaign. The Bantams are now four points off the final playoff place, and any hopes of securing one of the three automatic promotion places are long gone.

They welcome Leyton Orient  to Valley Parade in a week’s time, and need a win to get their promotion bid back on track.

Halifax Town remain in the playoff places in the National league despite a 2-0 home defeat against Woking.

The Shaymen are 5th with 10 games remaining, but the defeat means Woking are now creeping up on them, three points behind in 8th – the first non-playoff spot.

Halifax are at home to 22nd placed Ebbsfleet next, and must surely be looking for a win given the strength of the respective sides.

Bradford Park Avenue beat Chester 2-1, but unless this is the start of a major turnaround for the Avenue, it seems unlikely this will have any impact on the relegation battle in the National League North.

They’re dead last and 13 points clear of safety with 11 games to go – though Gloucester in 20th have two games in hand over Bradford, making the task even more challenging.

In Rugby League, Huddersfield Giants beat the reigning Super League champions St Helens in a  tight match on Friday night.

They won by 12 points to 10 away at Langtree Park, meaning they’ve now won four out of their first five league matches this season.

Meanwhile in the Championship, Bradford Bulls take on Sheffield Eagles this afternoon - with full match commentary live on Pulse 2 from 5pm.
