It's Chief Executive says "The Piece Hall is going in for a sleep and we will wake her up soon".
Halifax’s historic Piece Hall is closing its gates – at least for now – to help the fight against coronavirus.
The Piece Hall Trust made the announcement last night (Tues) and said the action was being taken to help the front line services cope with impacts of the epidemic.
The Grade I listed former 18th century cloth hall is building a reputation as a world heritage site since re-opening in August 2017 following a £19 million refurbishment, attracting millions of visitors.
Calderdale Council sees the feature, which houses a wide range of shops and businesses as well as its heritage aspects, as a major driver of the economy in Calderdale, in which tourism has been booming.
The Trust’s Chief Executive, Nicky Chance-Thompson, has added her own thoughts in a social media post on Twitter.
Ms Chance-Thompson said:
“This is the most difficult decision I’ve had to make but we have to put people first in all things.
“The Piece Hall is going in for a sleep and we will wake her up soon.”
The announcement, posted on the Piece Hall’s website www.thepiecehall.co.uk and its social media outlets, says:
“The Piece Hall is determined to support ongoing efforts to minimise the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.
“We have nothing but admiration for all in the NHS, at Calderdale Council, the Police, those supporting the food supply chain and people in wider society, all doing vital work to keep Calderdale going.
“Against this backdrop The Piece Hall must play its part too.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close The Piece Hall to the public for the time being.
“This is a sad day for us all, but our primary concern must be the health and safety of all.”
The message urges people who use the many shops and businesses there, some of which have already closed to aid the fight against the pandemic, to look out for information on how specific shops are adapting their offers online going forward.
The statement says:
“Don’t worry though – it’s not forever!
“We will continue to liaise closely with government, the council and the police force and we will keep you updated about when and how we will reopen.
“Please rest assured, The Piece Hall will be here ready and waiting to welcome you all back when this crisis has passed.
“For now, please follow government guidelines and stay home, keep fit and look after each other.
“See you on the other side.”
